HISTORY OF HLAC

The Hispanic/Latino Alumni Council (HLAC) was established in December 1999 with the purpose to provide an arena whereby Latino alumni from Kean University could network and enhance their career and professional growth. Soon thereafter, a mentoring program was created for Latino undergraduate students, followed by an annual Scholars Award for selected Latino undergraduates to supplement their financial aid. Following are highlights of our history:

  • First dinner/dance; February, 2000, Green Lane, sponsors: Kean University Alumni Association and the Association of Latin American Students (ALAS)

  • Publication of first newsletter HLAC update, Fall 2000

  • Ongoing academic/career workshops for undergraduates

  • Participation in Kean University Homecoming since Fall 2000

  • Hispanic Heritage Month Display, HLAC & ALAS, Townsend Hall

  • Leadership for Hispanic Association for Higher Education (HAHE) Conference, Kean University 2003

  • Mentoring Program created in 2005

  • Annual summer BBQs for alumni/family and friends

  • First Scholars Award – HLAC 10th Anniversary, Alumni House, Kean University, December 2009

  • HLAC Society of Scholars created; first induction, 12th Scholars Award Gala, May 2012

  • Letter of Engagement with Rutgers School of Law, Community Law Clinic, to begin drafting non-for-profit documents, September 2013.

  • HLAC/SSP Partnership: Mentoring Program 2013
  • First 5-year strategic planning retreat for 2013-2018 , June 2013

  • Certificate of Incorporation, December 2013

  • Acquired 501(c)(3) status, December 2015

  • Application filed for copyright of logo, November 2015
